About Village Kitchen家湘味
Village kitchen opened since 2014. Hunan stlye restaurant.
Located at 4720 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92117, Village Kitchen家湘味 operates as a chinese restaurant serving San Diego in California. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it.
In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in San Diego; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.
The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 11 am–2:30 pm. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, pos.chowbus.com.

San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Traffic in San Diego peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

This place is a hidden gem! All our food arrived in less than 10 minutes, and it was authentic Hunan cuisine — better than many places in China. We got the mashed eggplant and pork stomach chicken soup, which exceeded all our expectations. This place is a must try!

I ordered takeout. The food wasn't bad, though it certainly could have been better. The Spicy Chicken Gizzards, were underwhelming; the flavor felt rather home-style—lacking that distinctive, wok-seared aroma characteristic of authentic Hunan cuisine. Others all good.

I visited this Chinese restaurant around 5 p.m., and it was packed with happy locals, which is always a great sign. The green beans were absolutely fantastic, and the dishes were beautifully presented, even served with a bit of flair and flame. The food overall was very good, but for me, it was extremely spicy, almost overwhelmingly so. If you enjoy bold flavors and don’t mind serious heat, you’ll probably love it. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of options for lower spice levels. That said, the service was excellent. The staff was very accommodating to non-Asian customers, offering forks instead of chopsticks and taking the time to explain the dishes and how to order. Overall, a great experience, just be ready for the spice.

This Hunan-style restaurant specializes in regional dishes not often found elsewhere. We ordered two: stir-fried pork kidney with yellow larynx, and fish soup with pickled vegetables. The stir-fry was the stronger of the two. The kidney and larynx were sliced thin, well seasoned and cooked just enough to retain a pleasing crunch. The fish soup was less successful. The fish had been coated in too much starch, dulling the texture one hopes for in freshly sliced fillets. We stopped in only briefly during a road trip, but the menu suggests deeper rewards, with harder-to-find dishes like yellow eel that make the place worth a return.

Craving some authentic Chinese food during my SD trip yesterday and stumbled upon this place. So glad we did! The food is the real deal, Hunan cuisine. We got the spicy grilled fish, century egg eggplant, and the bullfrog. Every dish hit the spot and tastes just like home. Also shoutout to our server who was sweet and helped us figure out the spice levels and portions since it was our first time. Great service, amazing flavors. Highly recommend!
